Collaboration With Passion
Other duties included walking down to Phonogram Records to pick up their Artwork briefs, and to deliver Artwork back to them!
With the Budget Labels the brief was to try to make these albums and cassettes look expensive and full price!
I designed the Haircut One Hundred - Pelican West album, Poster, Music Press Adverts and 7" singles!
I also designed a Chiffons album, and many Country and Western and Jazz budget re-release albums.
After a year at M.T.I. I saw an advert in Marketing Week for an Art Director at Yellowhammer an Advertising Agency. I went for an interview and found out that the positon was to design for a music account that Yellowhammer had won
Where possible, I collected my unused visuals, and here is a good example of having to water down a good design! I reckon the visual was better than the final design?
I started work in a real Advertising Agency. I sat around most of the day, without any direction and was not allowed to work on their other covetted advertising accounts! This was a very unsuccessful and lonely time for me so I decided to leave as soon as possible
One of our clients at M. T. I. was Ron Winter who had set up a budget label with many different types of artists and music.
This Photo was taken in 1983, in Floral Street, Covent Garden, London. I paid £35 for desk space on the 3rd floor.i’m wearing a Fiorucci shirt, that I borrowed from Liz Campbell my girlfriend at the time. I shared the open plan studio with a small advertising agency, a typesetters, and six other self employed artists.
He remembered me when I went Freelance and gave me all his work, which was a good start.
